Today (04/07) the preparatory meeting for the next D-Day took place – My Father Has a Name! The program, started in Goiás, helps fathers and children in recognizing paternity throughout Brazil.
The event, open to the public, will take place on August 17. Law School students will be able to participate and watch the defenders in action.
Data from the Transparency Portal and the Association of Registrars show that, last year, 4,867 babies were registered without their father's name in Goiás. In Brazil, this number was 172,000 children. The program began at the Goiás Public Defender's Office and, since 2022, has been nationwide.
“The event will be held in all public defender’s offices in the country. In Goiânia, it will take place at the Marista unit and at UNIALFA, our partner. We expect a greater number of paternity recognitions this year,” said Bruno Malta Borges, Public Defender of the State of Goiás.
“We are bringing forward the collection of genetic material so that, on August 17, the results of the DNA tests will be available and paternity can be confirmed immediately. We will also have the participation of OVG, offering layettes for newborns. This partnership aims to eradicate under-registration of paternity, which still affects thousands of children in Goiás,” added Borges.
In addition to facilitating paternity recognition, the event seeks to raise awareness in society about the importance of paternal registration for the social and psychological development of children. The active participation of partner institutions reinforces everyone's commitment to the cause.
