According to research carried out by Tendências Consultoria Integrada, published in Estadão, only five Brazilian states are expected to end 2021 with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) higher than the pre-coronavirus pandemic level. Goiás is one of them!
The positive projection is due, according to the consultancy, to optimism surrounding the price of agricultural and mineral commodities. Growth in Goiás is forecast at 0.5% in 2021, compared to the result of 2019 – which had a GDP of R$ 191.899 billion (IBGE). Economist at Tendências, Lucas Assis states that the State will benefit from its regional production structure, which is not very sensitive to national dynamics, just like Mato Grosso (it will grow 1.4%, in the same period).
The three states that will also see growth are: Mato Grosso do Sul (2.7%), Pará (1.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.5%).
Economist
For the economist and coordinator of the UNIALFA Master's Research Center, Aurélio Troncoso, the forecast of 0.5% for Goiás' GDP is the minimum. The expectation is almost 2%, in the academic's view.
Aurélio states that Goiás has practically the entire industrial sector focused on food and beverages, which depend on agribusiness. “Agribusiness has practically not stopped and agribusiness has not stopped, not only in Goiás, but in Brazil. In fact, had an increase in GDP this year from 12% to 22% [of this segment]. Food and beverages are essential and everything related, continued, even with the pandemic”.
He further states that Goiás is one of the largest producers of soybeans, corn and meat in the country. “And these are the ones most responsible for our GDP.” The Association of Soybean and Corn Producers of Goiás (Aprosoja-GO) confirms the information.
