Presentation
THE Professional Master's Degree in Regional Development (MDR) from the Alves Faria University Center – UNIALFA It promotes the immersion of the postgraduate student so that they learn how to incorporate scientific research (existing and future) into their professional career. The professional master's degree differs from the academic master's degree because the latter prepares a researcher who seeks to continue their career with a doctorate.
The goal of a professional master's program is to immerse the graduate student in research, to ensure they become familiar with it, but not necessarily that they continue researching afterward. The important thing is that they:
- Know from your own experience what it is to research;
- Know where to find, in the future, the research that interests your profession;
- Learn how to include existing and future research in your professional work.
The course has two priority axes: add competitiveness and productivity to public and private companies; to improve the management of companies and social sectors of the government, NGOs and public-spirited organizations.
The program's area of concentration is Regional Urban Planning and Demography, approached didactically in two lines of research:
- Public Policies, Innovation, Territoriality and Sustainability;
- Education for Regional Development.
Faculty members work within research areas according to their professional and academic background, and the research topics of their interest. Each research area is detailed in terms of topics on which faculty members are already conducting or may conduct research and dissertation supervision.
Thus, MDR candidates are informed in advance of the research topics and the professors associated with them, contributing to the process of indicating and choosing supervisors during the dissertation writing phase.

Area of Concentration and Research Lines
THE Professional Master's Degree in Regional Development from the Alves Faria University Center – UNIALFA has as its area of concentration Regional Urban Planning and Demography, with two lines of research: Public Policies, Productive Arrangements, Smart and Sustainable Cities and Education and Regional Development. Each line of research is detailed in topics on which professors already develop or may develop research and dissertation supervision.
PUBLIC POLICIES, INNOVATION, TERRITORIALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
It investigates regional development processes from the formulation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies, considering the interactions between innovation, territoriality, sustainability, and governance. It analyzes the effects of policies, institutions, and development strategies on the organization of territories, regional competitiveness, social inclusion, productive transformation, and economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
This line of research encompasses studies focused on territorial governance, smart cities, digital transformation, technological and social innovation, urban and regional planning, infrastructure, logistics, mobility, sustainability, climate change, green economy, energy transition, local productive arrangements, entrepreneurship, rural and urban development, as well as the impacts of public policies on reducing territorial inequalities and promoting equity.
It seeks to understand the mechanisms by which different actors — the State, the market, universities, social organizations, and communities — interact in building innovative solutions to the contemporary challenges of sustainable regional development.
EDUCATION FOR REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
This research investigates the role of education as a strategic factor for regional development, analyzing the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of public education policies, as well as their impacts on human skills, social inclusion, innovation, productivity, and the reduction of territorial inequalities.
This line of research encompasses studies on basic education, higher education, vocational and technological education, teacher training, educational management, corporate education, lifelong learning, internationalization, educational innovation, and the development of skills geared towards the economic, social, and institutional demands of the territories.
It encompasses research that examines the relationships between education, human capital, employability, entrepreneurship, innovation, citizenship, and sustainable development, considering different regional contexts and the specificities of educational systems. It also includes investigations into educational inclusion, retention, equity, educational technologies, digital education, educational assessment, and the impacts of educational institutions on local and regional development.
This line of research seeks to understand how education contributes to strengthening individual and collective capabilities, expanding opportunities, promoting social mobility, and driving sustainable regional development processes.

It is part of the program MOC – Microeconomics of Competitiveness, which takes place annually at Harvard University (Boston). UNIALFA's master's students participate in this study group on competitiveness (with more than 150 universities worldwide) led by Professor Michael Porter of Harvard Business School – HBS in Boston/Massachusetts -USA;
Workshops with professors, researchers, and students from institutions around the world on competitiveness and regional clusters (productive arrangements);
Partnerships with the public and private sectors to promote technical visits and exchanges of practical applied knowledge.
MOC Harvard – Microeconomics of Competitiveness
The program MOC – Microeconomics of Competitiveness, in partnership with UNIALFA, aims to carry out studies on the business competitiveness of business clusters in the Midwest region, aiming at the development of academic research and teaching cases. UNIALFA is affiliated with the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard University (Boston/Massachusetts-USA), led by Professor Emeritus Michael Porter, whose main objective is to explore the determinants of competitiveness and business success from a regional economic perspective.

PDSE scholarship holder (2016) from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo – Mexico. Master in Environmental Sciences from the University of the State of Mato Grosso. Graduated in Biological Sciences. He is currently a professor in the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Regional Development at UNIALFA, and an associate researcher at the Center for Studies in Limnology, Biodiversity and Ethnobiology of the Pantanal. He has experience in the areas of ethnobiology, ecology and sustainable rural development. He is a member of the board of directors of the Brazilian Society of Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology, term 2019-2024. He has worked on interdisciplinary projects with a focus on environmental analysis and management, sustainable development and green economy. He works as a technical management consultant on the Agrichaim chain project by the ILPF Network, financed by GIZ. THE Professional Master's Degree in Regional Development from the Alves Faria University Center – UNIALFA has as its area of concentration Regional Urban Planning and Demography, with two lines of research: PUBLIC POLICIES, INNOVATION, TERRITORIALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY and Education for Regional Development. Each line of research is detailed in topics on which professors already develop or may develop research and dissertation supervision.
PUBLIC POLICIES, INNOVATION, TERRITORIALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
It investigates regional development processes from the formulation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies, considering the interactions between innovation, territoriality, sustainability, and governance. It analyzes the effects of policies, institutions, and development strategies on the organization of territories, regional competitiveness, social inclusion, productive transformation, and economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
This line of research encompasses studies focused on territorial governance, smart cities, digital transformation, technological and social innovation, urban and regional planning, infrastructure, logistics, mobility, sustainability, climate change, green economy, energy transition, local productive arrangements, entrepreneurship, rural and urban development, as well as the impacts of public policies on reducing territorial inequalities and promoting equity.
It seeks to understand the mechanisms by which different actors — the State, the market, universities, social organizations, and communities — interact in building innovative solutions to the contemporary challenges of sustainable regional development.
Education for Regional Development
This research investigates the role of education as a strategic factor for regional development, analyzing the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of public education policies, as well as their impacts on human skills, social inclusion, innovation, productivity, and the reduction of territorial inequalities.
This line of research encompasses studies on basic education, higher education, vocational and technological education, teacher training, educational management, corporate education, lifelong learning, internationalization, educational innovation, and the development of skills geared towards the economic, social, and institutional demands of the territories.
It encompasses research that examines the relationships between education, human capital, employability, entrepreneurship, innovation, citizenship, and sustainable development, considering different regional contexts and the specificities of educational systems. It also includes investigations into educational inclusion, retention, equity, educational technologies, digital education, educational assessment, and the impacts of educational institutions on local and regional development.
This line of research seeks to understand how education contributes to strengthening individual and collective capabilities, expanding opportunities, promoting social mobility, and driving sustainable regional development processes.
MOC HARVARD
The program Harvard University Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) led by Professor Emeritus Michael Porter aims to explore the determinants of competitiveness and business success from a regional economic perspective.
This entity currently brings together approximately 100 affiliated universities around the world, which carry out research on local businesses, grouped into clusters or local production arrangements, using an analysis methodology that considers not only traditional production factors, but also the level of internal demand, the presence of related and support sectors (government, universities, research institutes), as well as the competitive dynamics of existing companies.
The MOC – UNIALFA Agreement was established with the aim of developing analyses on the Central-West region, aiming at the development of academic research, and teaching cases on the business and competitive competence of clusters business.
This program promotes annually workshops bringing together professors, researchers and students from affiliated institutions around the world, who present cases on the competitiveness of clusters regional.
Microeconomics of Competitiveness Course for UNIALFA Master's students
This course uses exclusive cases from the partnership with the Michael Porter Institute, and students are encouraged to learn about the intellectual production of this group of professors from around the world and, at the end, participate in a case study. The best case study developed within the scope of the course is translated into English and sent to the annual meeting of researchers from the MOC group to compete for the award for best production by institution.
UNIALFA is the only institution in the Central-West and North of Brazil participating in this agreement. Several professors from the master's programs were present at the training courses to share ideas, knowledge, methodology, and material made available by the MOC network.
In addition to the discipline and the development of case studies, UNIALFA's MOC has a technical visit project to meet professors from the MOC network in other countries and companies that had cases used by the network to support analyses and search for solutions for business groups with the aim of supporting the socioeconomic development of different regions of the planet.
In 2015, professors Cintia Godoi and Bento Alves Costa were present at the annual meeting in Harvard, Boston.
In 2016, professors Bento Alves Costa, Cintia Godoi and Luís Antonio Vilalta were present at the annual meeting in Harvard, Boston.
In 2017, professors Cintia Godoi, Marcelo Ladvocat, Paulo Bontempo and Sergio Caruso attended the annual meeting in Harvard, Boston.
In 2018, professors Alcido Wander, Bento Filho, Cintia Godoi and Marcelo Ladvocat attended the annual meeting held in Boston. This year, only 6 articles were selected from the 60 submitted by different institutions from around the world. The MOC Unialfa team was among those approved and presented an article Cooperation and competitiveness in Brazilian crafted beer production: The case of gypsy breweries in Goiás State.

- Although the Central-West region is the main locus of studies, there have been studies conducted in several locations in the country, such as Bahia, Roraima, Tocantins and Pará. This indicates the scope of Goiânia's area of influence as a regional metropolis, as presented by Regic, an IBGE study, which also indicates the scope of the area of influence of the program itself, which has attracted people from all over the country, especially from areas with the greatest need for postgraduate programs.
MDR PARTNERSHIPS - UNIALFA AND UNILICUNGO
The research group focuses on using the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to support local and regional development. The research lines include the analysis of dynamics and competitiveness strategies in innovation environments, as well as exploring concepts of cooperation and competitiveness. The group aims to understand how these instruments can foster growth, identifying when productive sectors should cooperate or compete.
Activities planned for 2021 to 2024 include monthly online meetings to discuss and publish content. These meetings aim to gather data and theories on the SDGs and cooperation in innovation. Composed of undergraduate and graduate professors, the group contributes to the debate on sustainable development, seeking to understand the relationship between cooperation and competitiveness strategies and the indicators of the 2030 Agenda.
