Course Objective

The main objective of an environmental engineer is to preserve the environment. This purpose is achieved through policies, strategies and actions that aim to reduce the human impact on the planet and restore areas that suffer from the misuse of environmental resources.

Target audience

Some of the main requirements for entering environmental engineering are having a great capacity for logical reasoning, organization and ability with exact science subjects.

Graduate profile

He is a professional with a generalist background and an entrepreneurial profile who seeks viable solutions, with transversality and innovation. He works in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of environmental conditions in industry and in urban and rural areas, reconciling economic development with sustainability and environmental preservation.

Graduates can work in the areas of environment, water resources and sanitation, coordinating, supervising and training work teams, conducting technical, economic and environmental feasibility studies. They can also participate in the design, planning and execution of technical services in a creative and critical manner, using the adaptation and use of new technologies.

In its activities, it considers ethics, safety, cultural and social aspects and environmental legislation. Graduates of the course can work in regulatory agencies, in teaching and research, in the public sector, in public service concessionaires, companies in the industrial sector, in consultancy and as freelancers.

Job market

The main objective of an environmental engineer who chooses to work on the recovery of deforested and polluted areas is to restore the environment to ideal conditions for the restructuring of life. In general, this area deals mainly with environments that have been severely affected and that, on their own, would not be able to regenerate.

A deforested or polluted area is also called a “degraded area”, that is, an area that, after some action, has little or no capacity to return to its original state. They are also areas with low quantity and quality of minerals in the soil, which prevents the existence of vegetation.

Therefore, the environmental engineer's role is to think of recovery techniques that work for different types of soil and in different regions.

To work in this area, he therefore needs to:

  • Have extensive knowledge of biology;
  • Conduct research and studies on floral remnants and environments to be reforested;
  • Understand in depth the possible causes of degradation and how to avoid it;
  • Be interested in issues such as plant species, vegetation, reforestation models, etc.
