Students from the Psychology course at UNIALFA developed, throughout the semester, an activity aimed at elderly people served by the cognitive stimulation group at the Casa de Deus Community Work Center (CTC CD), in Goiânia. The action is part of the course's extension project and was guided by Professor Dr. Maria Virgínia.
The activity was organized in a circuit format, with simple, dynamic challenges designed to stimulate different skills. Using colored balls, cups, hula hoops, and sticks, participants were invited to move their bodies, exercise their attention, work on their memory, and interact with the group in a light and participatory way.
Each stage of the circuit was planned to respect the pace of the elderly and value their potential. The tasks stimulated motor coordination, visual and spatial perception, concentration, planning, and reaction time, always taking care to ensure that the experience was accessible, welcoming, and meaningful.
In addition to cognitive and motor benefits, the activity also created a space for social interaction. During the activity, participants were able to share moments of interaction, cooperation, and strengthening of bonds, important aspects for autonomy, quality of life, and active aging.
For the students, the experience represented an opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice. By observing and participating in the intervention, the students were able to better understand the challenges of caring for the elderly and the importance of a sensitive, ethical, and humanized professional approach.
With this initiative, the Psychology course at UNIALFA reinforces the importance of university extension as a way to unite learning, social responsibility, and care for the community.
